The SESC Pompeia is an iconic cultural and sports center in São Paulo, designed by Lina Bo Bardi between 1977 and 1982. It consists of an existing building, originally constructed by François Hennebique, and three towers added by the Italian-Brazilian architect.
Originally, the halls housed a barrel factory. After the factory closed down, the local community gradually took over the space. Concerned with preserving the spirit of gathering and sharing that had developed there, the architect transformed the site by integrating a theater, workshops, and large open areas intended for exhibitions.
True to her heritage-sensitive approach, she preserved the original walls and subtly integrated the new volumes, highlighting the unity of the roof, which seems to float above a variety of functions.
The interior is also notable for the presence of a river that winds freely between the concrete pillars. Monumental and entirely open, the space offers smooth circulation beneath a unifying roof.
