Municipal Orphanage / Van Eyck

Anna Rachel Simone Benador

The Municipal Orphanage by Aldo and Hanni Van Eyck was built between 1955 and 1960 in Amsterdam. It can be seen as a network because, thanks to its structure and specific arrangements, it succeeds in connecting the entire building and its users. Regarding the structure, it is based on a square grid and mainly consists of three elements: columns, architraves, and vaults. Within this large structural unit, there is nonetheless a great diversity of uses, thanks to highly specific elements designed according to the needs of each group of children. These objects serve as both meeting places and points of connection between different spaces. Finally, an internal street connects each of the units (where children of different ages are divided) and also becomes a public interior.
