Built in 1974 in Eindhoven by architect Frank van Klingeren, ’t Karregat was an ambitious architectural and social experiment. This community center brought together a school, supermarket, library, sports center, and social spaces under one roof, reflecting a utopian vision of collective life where social interaction was encouraged by an open, wall-free structure. The architecture stimulated use through its expansive open roof and spatial flexibility: van Klingeren deliberately left certain elements unfinished, allowing users to take ownership of the space and adapt it to their needs. Movable furniture and lightweight partitions helped give this large public interior a domestic and friendly scale. However, while the ideal of freedom was innovative, reality proved more complex: noise disturbances, lack of privacy, and disorientation quickly emerged. In the 2010s, a renovation introduced fixed partitions, calling the original project into question. The building’s partial failure as a public space lies in the tension between total openness and the need for more structured organization.
