The Lighthouse

Paul Armen Schaffner

Densification, achieved through elevating existing buildings, is a pragmatic and culturally relevant approach for Switzerland. Elevating buildings allows for a reduced footprint, preserving green spaces, fostering greater interaction within the campus, and presenting a more socially acceptable alternative to densifying existing land plots.

The Bernoulli Center, as it stands, offers a unique opportunity to embody EPFL’s commitment to innovation. Its existing structure is strategically positioned on campus and is perfectly suited for vertical expansion, allowing it to become a tangible example of our densification strategy. This building isn’t just a recipient of this strategy; it's the ideal starting point, a fertile ground upon which to build a more sustainable future.

The Light House is not just an extension, it is an iconic addition to the EPFL campus, a symbol of EPFL’s commitment to innovation, talent attraction, and enhancing the university’s image. Its distinctive design will contribute significantly to the campus aesthetic, providing a visible representation of sustainability that can inspire similar projects.
