The exhibition presents a counter proposal to the traditional model of global expos by creating a decentralised approach. Instead of a single site, the project develops multiple nodes around the world, connected through a virtual/real hybrid exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is mobility, showcasing advanced examples of cities experimenting with changes in urban mobility.
The project is situated in an existing parking garage in Hangzhou, China, featuring two helical and symmetrical ramps. Three main themes run throughout the project: circulation layout, lighting design, and virtual experiences. Efforts have been made to ensure smooth transitions between the two ramps and to optimize the compact structure. The project uses lighting to create an aesthetically interesting and functional experience, transitioning from dark to bright spaces. Virtual projection tunnels are used to connect the different nodes, offering an immersive journey to another city, like Amsterdam, known for its advanced cycling regulations.
The exhibition is divided into two atmospheres: immersive tunnels and platforms connecting the ramps. The tunnels are dedicated to different types of mobility experiences, such as foot, scooter, and bike travel. The design allows visitors to experience the tunnels at different speeds and modes of transportation. The platforms serve as transitional spaces, providing information on the experiences and allowing visitors to skip parts of the exhibition if desired.
The project's ground floor functions as the exit, housing toilets, a shop, and administrative and storage spaces. To ensure a seamless transition from the dark immersive tunnel to the bright central void, a cladded facade with oriented slats has been added. The orientation of the claddings also helps identify the location of the immersive tunnels, aiding navigation within the structure.
This decentralised exhibition challenges the conventional model of global expos and emphasizes international cooperation in shaping sustainable and inclusive cities for the future. By showcasing diverse urban environments and innovative solutions, the project serves as a catalyst for progress in urban mobility.
