Geneva. A diverse city?

Joan Part López

Geneva is said to be one the most cosmopolitan cities in Switzerland. Indeed, some particular traits of the city (proximity to the French border, presence of the UN headquarters and many other international NGO, etc.) make of Geneva an exception in the Swiss region. However, the high cost of living and the difficulties to get a Swiss visa make it complicated to create a genuine diverse environment.

Furthermore, the lack of diversity and the social consequences it entails (segregation, racial conflicts, etc.) could be aggravated in the upcoming years: the implementation of the "15 minute city" model will imply lower social interactions with other parts of the city. Therefore, in neighbourhoods where everybody shares similar characteristics (cultural, socioeconomical, demographical, etc.) the daily contact of their inhabitants with diversity will decrease, creating a false sense of homogeneity.

This project aims to identify the areas of Geneva with a higher need for diversity and propose specific strategies to foster it, focusing on three case studies: the city centre, Lancy and Chêne-Bougeries.
