In The Public Interior as Idea and Project, Mark Pimlott defines the Shed as an architecture whose fundamental role is to shelter, host and contain. It is a basic architectural form, capable of accomodating «a world under one roof», where both container and content dialog.
Standing alone yet unifying, the project establishes a new focal point between EPFL and UNIL by bringing student life together under a single roof. This roof creates the space: a vast, open, and equitable open-plan area where various activities coexist, while storage facilities rise into the roof, affirming its structural role. In detail, the reuse of EPFL’s three- dimensional trellis extends the campus’s legacy and builds a sense of community, while addressing an ecological need.
