Since 1996, the City of Lausanne has provided shared gardens across the municipality, allowing residents to cultivate small plots. In 2021, significant dioxin contamination was identified in many urban soils, raising serious concerns for these sites. Over four phases, students developed a project on this site, progressing from the conception of foundations to an exploration of the potential project.
I. To protect the project from contaminated soil, the Japanese Soseki Kiso method is used. This traditional technique creates a stable base by combining natural materials - primarily wood and stone - to elevate the structure.
II. A bioremediation system provides a controlled environment for the biological degradation of dioxins. Contaminated soil is placed on an impermeable layer inside a greenhouse. A small elevated cabin serves as a shelter and storage space for staff overseeing the process.
III. A treenursery is established where young plants are grown in biodegradable bags for future transplantation. An adapted irrigation system prevents both water stress and excess moisture. Meanwhile, local residents regain activity within the site while awaiting soil decontamination.
IV. The garden extends into the building: irrigation water flows from the roof down the balconies and into the garden before reaching a pond. Hemp vines create a vegetated continuity between the garden and the existing façade.
