The Centraal Beheer project, designed by Herman Hertzberger in 1972, transforms the workplace into a true living environment. It embodies a humanistic and democratic vision of interior space, conceived to encourage appropriation and conviviality.
The building is based on a three-dimensional grid of 9x9-meter modules, allowing for great flexibility in use. Each module can function autonomously while remaining connected to the whole, facilitating interaction, adaptability, and the coexistence of formal and informal uses.
The architecture and furnishings - walkways, platforms, curtains, plants, informal seating - introduce a domestic scale. Far from bureaucratic anonymity, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming: everyone can find their own place.
Commissioned by an insurance company, the project aims to make the workplace a livable and appropriable space, where architecture supports daily life without imposing itself.
