The ground floor of the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) is occupied by a vast public space, opened up by four imposing pillars that lift the exhibition halls above the ground. Located in the heart of Avenida Paulista, this void functions as a shaded urban square offering passersby a place to rest and museum visitors shelter from the elements.
It is a space imbued with values of freedom: designed without vertical supports or fixed furniture, it allows for total flexibility. Its generous scale makes it ideal for gatherings : cultural events, artisan markets, and political demonstrations have taken place here since its creation.
Lightweight structures — tents, circus canopies, market stalls — are regularly set up in the space. They offer opportunities for gathering or retreat, revealing its capacity for constant adaptation. Through its successive transformations, the void beneath MASP becomes much more than a museum entrance: it is a living urban stage.
