The project Civic Cycles aims to frame biking in Milan through a coherent design system consisting of the repetition of generic elements such as bike pumps, racks, or trashcans. Taking inspiration from the Milan Metro, the project seeks to establish a radical design language while maintaining identification and clarity.
Based on a thorough analysis of the challenges surrounding biking in Milan and the city’s car-centric political landscape, Civic Cycles seeks to rebalance the relationship between cars and bikes by making cycling more visible, safe, and attractive.
The project holds Milanese policies accountable for their stated ambitions to improve cycling infrastructure. It proposes an investment in small-scale objects and amenities to create a city-wide system aligned with Milan’s self-proclaimed role as a capital of design.
