The Warung: Living Sites for the Indonesian Diaspora

Laure Melati Dekoninck

Traditionally run by women, the warung is an often informal family-owned business providing food, drinks, and other daily necessities. It holds space for making kin: nurturing gossip and other intergenerational transfers of knowledge. Sometimes plugged at the front of a house, sometimes punctually intervening within the urban fabric through a cart, the warung extends domesticity beyond western divisions of private and public. This project is for the Indonesian diaspora in Lausanne. It is a manual that aims to accompany them when they arrive, by containing in its first part information to access the existing Indonesian kinship systems in Lausanne. As a later phase, it serves as a guide to locate spaces in the city center suitable to receive a warung, creating more opportunities for gathering outside of the limits of private property. Dari mulut ke mulut, kami terus selalu menjaga satu sama lain. “Through word of mouth, we continue to look after each other.”
