Unexploited Farms in the Canton Vaud : Shelters for Current Homes

Céline Gruffel

Since the seventies, villages in the Canton de Vaud have experienced significant demographic growth as inhabitants left city centers to live in the countryside. This urban exodus led to the mass construction of single-family houses, which encroached on crop land. Consequently, the rural buildings that formerly supported the local economy of these peri-urban areas, gradually stopped their activity. Unexploited, farms were often threatened to be demolished to make way for new housing developments. Still relevant nowadays, the issue concerning the preservation of rural heritage in the peri-urban context was my énoncé’s focus and my project’s starting point. In response to this situation, the project proposes housing typologies as alternative to single-family houses, preserving the heritage and the characteristic spaces of farms. The project focuses on a farm situated in Assens, a village on the periphery Lausanne. Formerly used as a production space, the building is currently unexploited but well-preserved. The existing masonry and wooden carpentry become the shell for new paths, courtyards, terraces and rooms, accommodating four different families. These spaces, whether insulated or intermediate, communal or individual, create a living environment that mimics the one of a village beneath the farm's roof.
