Temporary Sanctuaries. An Anti-future for the Church

Maria Beatrice Fenoglio

In Italy, many churches have lost their purpose, their shells emptied by the decline of Catholicism. This project explores how these buildings can be transformed into “temporary sanctuaries,” a concept introduced to redefine sacredness as shelter, echoing churches’ ancient roles as refugees. Believing these structures can still serve populations by redefining their role, three Ligurian churches are designed as “temporary sanctuaries,” opening up to an anti-future—away from a gloomy horizon. Leveraging its built mass and thermal inertia, the San Siro church in Sanremo responds to the climate crisis by becoming a refuge from summer urban heat for all. Colonized by ferns and mosses, fitted with mist devices, it offers a cool environment to rest. In winter, it reverts to warmth to become an asylum for migrants, sheltering from the cold in alcoves on the carpeted floor. The church in the hamlet of San Romolo becomes a sanctuary for underrepresented populations using it cyclically—a Muslim praying hall, a queer community gathering, or else. San Gregorio church, abandoned in the Ligurian hinterland, becomes a shelter for explorers from wind and rain while a refuge for the more-than-humans. The architectural interventions articulate an anti-future for these churches, serving contemporary communities’ needs, taking advantage of existing features, accepting failure as part of their revival, and offering innovative solutions in a context of continuous uncertainty and transformation.
