Childcare in Switzerland presents unique challenges. Sixty percent of the population has a foreign background and lacks extended family nearby to assist young families. At the same time, childcare in Switzerland is among the most expensive in the world, often forcing women to sacrifice their careers. However, if families can afford childcare, their children may miss out on intergenerational connections. Similarly, elderly people without family nearby experience minimal interaction with younger generations over time. Lack of intergenerational contact leads to social, political and economic conflicts. And yet this project is not a simply solution to the problem but an attempt to present a new format for intergenerational communication. Given the high longevity of life in Switzerland, people in the second half of life are addressed not as frail and weak but active and capable, not as only receivers but providers of care. The project represents a prototype of a self-organised association, proving after-school care and focusing on intergenerational exchange. Located in Zurich, the city with the highest rates of expatriates, the project is situated in Wiedikon, close to a school and hospital, and surrounded by non-profit family housing. Architecture in this center serves as a playground by promoting physical coordination through diverse environments while also supporting social exchange. For people in later stages of life, it acts as a preventive measure against health issues by stimulating physical and mental activity and providing space for comfortable interaction with younger generations. For children, the center becomes a safe zone for a broad range of play types, benefiting their neural development. In contrast to large, impersonal, and institutionalized care facilities, the center offers a more intimate environment with carefully crafted mix of loud and vibrant spaces, quiet nooks, gardens and squares.
