What if it were otherwise? As contradiction, otherwise suggests a possibility of doing things differently. Its character as refutation, or revision, proposes an alternative from what was previously stated. To do, think, observe, or imagine otherwise opens up a field of possibilities inclusive of deviance, difference, and transgression. Equally, otherwise circumvents binaries by less clearly suggesting a single party or whole against another. Instead, it makes space for alterity, and suggests multiple paths of divergence. This multitude is integral to its ambiguity - otherwise might appear neutral, but it might also be used as a means to emphasise or resist. We chose to address this theme to question our past, present and future, by looking into fictions or realities, actions or ideas, movements or revolts, rules or exceptions, conformities or anomalies. This issue is the result of an editorial effort that seeks to bring together contributions from different voices and horizons. Doing otherwise is acknowledging the value of approaches and positions within and without one’s own, as a constant cycle of questioning and opening possibilities.
