AR-415 (UE-N): 2019-S: Constructing the View II: Composition Series

A series of two-dimensional geometric compositional figures and their subsequent gradual transfer to a three-dimensional visual context.

After an introduction to digital image-processing techniques and the teaching of visual composition strategies, the students were asked to examine two-dimensional abstract artworks in the first part of the coursework. The task was to note several approaches to visual composition, as well as to seek engagement with various proportional relationships. Based on the insights gained and starting with a blank sheet, the students subsequently designed a series of freely composed figures that comprised coherent geometric forms. The compositions, initially laid out in flat line drawings, were to be visually articulated in three dimensions, step by step. This was achieved by using surface textures of varying brightness, or by incorporating additional shading gradients that created a relief-like appearance, and finally by means of a perspective view and the use of image textures, so as to transfer the initially two-dimensional compositions to a photographic visual context. In addition to teaching professional digital image-processing and montage techniques, the aim was to enhance compositional skills, as well as to explore the points of contact between two-dimensional and spatially depictive forms of representation.
