Dear EPFL jury members for the rehabilitation of the Bassenges Estate,
Dear members of the EPFL leadership,
Dear representatives of the various EPFL bodies,
Dear EPFL community,
On December 20, 2024, some of you had the opportunity to attend the presentation by the students of the MA1 architecture project workshop "Theory and Critique of the Project" (LDM). This presentation focused on their in-depth analysis of the rehabilitation project for the Bassenges Estate.
The study conducted by the students highlights the significance of the Bassenges Farm within the EPFL ecosystem. This agricultural site, the last active farm on campus, represents a valuable intangible heritage, enriching the campus's identity and history through its agroecological, educational, and social practices.
The work proposes alternatives to address the campus's growing needs while preserving the unique agricultural activities of the Bassenges Farm. It explores the possibility of thoughtful and sustainable densification of the building currently used by the Bernoulli Center.
We believe that the ideas and proposals developed by the students raise essential questions for the future of our school. They invite broader reflection on the direction of EPFL's campus development and its relationship with its territory.
For those who could not attend the event or wish to review the materials presented, we are pleased to share with you the presentation script (in French and English), the slides in PDF format and the speaker's notes linking slides to text.
We hope these documents will contribute to the ongoing reflections on this significant project. If you are interested, we would be delighted to organize another discussion. Please feel free to share your feedback or contact us if you wish to access some or all of the presentation materials.
Kind regards,
The (un)studio
