FOOD PRODUCTION - AN URBAN PERFORMANCE
RECREATING THE LINK BY GIVING TO SEE
The project is located in the district of Jung-gu, Bukseongno in the city of Daegu, South Korea.
The built fabric has a very high degree of ground saturation despite the low density. The block is mainly composed of semi-industrial buildings and activities. The relationship to the street is a strategic condition of the semi-industrial spaces in the heart of these blocks.
In a world of commuters, I hardly believe in food autonomy through urban agriculture. However, agriculture in urban areas seems important in order to show the production processes so as to re-appropriate them and become aware of the difficulty of agricultural production.
The project wants to put food production at the centre of all the flows, thus obliging the inhabitant to walk past his plants. The typology takes into account the «dirty» space of production and the clean inhabitable space. The «clean» space allows different possibility of appropriation.
The housing kitchen on the ground floor and the toilets concentrated outside of the rooms, in the dirty space, the spatial sequence allows for different ways of living, considering a family house, different studios or a building that can accommodate a larger community.
The façade itself becomes dynamic, the subtle and necessary interplay between the blinds and the openings vis-à-vis the varieties of plants makes it alive if well suited and maintained or dead if not.
Manufacturing activities on the ground floor are also to be considered as a resource to be valued within the city. Thus, the project wants to create a link between the inhabitants and the other users of the project, while respecting their own needs and characteristics.
Despite a research focus on typology, connecting with culture thus implies a community responsibility within the building as well as an interplay within the different actors and the street . A political matter, an urban theatre.
