STERN interrogates the necessity to demolish a building from the 1950s, a building claimed to no longer meet the “requirements in terms of energy efficiency and living comfort”? This dangerous logic means that all buildings built in this period are up for demolition. Achieving carbon neutrality necessitates recognizing that the ultimate sustainability lies in the building that is already there and valuing its embodied carbon. Challenging the norm of renovation becomes crucial and holds the chance of reforming comfort culture.
