Learning By Example - 180 Queens St

180 Queens St, Norman Shaw, London, 1883

Through using references and the study of the ideas and projects of other architects, societies or groups we are interested in developing an awareness that when we approach any design question, we do so as a part of a long culture and practice. We are not the first people the engage with these questions, and the work of others is a way of grounding our ideas in a critique of projects and ideas that have come before.

This exercise is about acknowledging, extending and adapting the work of others to enable us to act in an informed, intelligent as we begin the development of our own project. As a studio, we are dubious of the culture that places excessive emphasis on originality, novelty or individual authorship and brilliance. This does not mean that as individuals you should not take responsibility for or ownership of aspects of a project or develop strong individual or specific ideas.

Intelligent practice combines individual experience, knowledge and skill with an understanding of the work done by others. In order to make projects that are informed, critical and intelligent is important to begin the process of building up your own sense of the architects, projects and ideas that you will bring with you to the beginning of this project, but also your future practice and professional life.
