A l’heure de l’urgence climatique et de la contraction des ressources disponibles, la poursuite de l’étalement urbain est fortement remise en question. Face à ce constat, le projet architectural est amené à jouer un rôle central dans la recherche d’alternatives permettant de régénérer les territoires urbains, de densifier habilement le bâti à proximité immédiate des transports publics et, plus largement, d’inscrire l’art de bâtir dans une dynamique de transition vers une société décarbonée. Dans le contexte helvétique, il s’avère qu’une grande partie des secteurs urbanisés sont en pente, ce qui génère de multiples défis tant au niveau du bâti que de la mobilité. L’implantation des édifices et la création d’espaces publics se confrontent à d’incontournables questions au niveau du rapport au sol et de la minimisation des mouvements de terrain. Au niveau de la mobilité, il s’agit de redécouvrir et revaloriser des techniques de transports développées avant l’hégémonie de la voiture et, plus particulièrement, les transports électriques spécifiquement adaptés à la pente.
Localisé sur les hauteurs de la ville de Vevey, le site retenu pour l’atelier 2023-2024 jouxte une station intermédiaire du funiculaire Vevey – Chardonne – Mont-Pèlerin, qui relie depuis le début du 20esiècle les rives du Léman au versant de la montagne. Occupé actuellement par des serres horticoles à l’abandon et surplombant la région de Lavaux, il se caractérise par la qualité de ses dégagements visuels et l’efficience de sa desserte par câble, ce qui encourage les réflexions architecturales quant à ses possibles futurs. Entre utopie et réalisme, il pourrait notamment accueillir un quartier écologique d’un nouveau genre, à imaginer sur une pente déjà largement façonnée par la main de l’homme. S’inscrivant dans une perspective de transition, l’atelier RELIEFS URBAINS visera à explorer par le projet architectural les multiples enjeux et potentialités de mutation d’un tel site. Une attention accrue sera portée à la question de l’habitat intermédiaire, ainsi qu’à la gestion des aspects paysagers et le maillage des espaces publics en regard des caractéristiques singulières du site.

At a time of climate emergency and contraction of available resources, a continuation of urban sprawl is strongly questioned. The architectural project has a central role in the search for alternatives that allow the regeneration of urban territories, the careful densification of buildings in the immediate vicinity of public transport, and, more broadly, the inclusion of good construction practice within the transition dynamics towards a low-carbon society. In the Swiss context, a large part of the urbanized areas is on slopes, which generates multiple challenges in terms of building and mobility. The implantation of buildings and the creation of public spaces are confronted with unavoidable questions regarding the relationship to the ground level and the minimization of soil excavation. In terms of mobility, it is a matter of rediscovering and revaluing transport techniques developed before the hegemony of the car and, more particularly, electric transport specifically adapted to the slope.
Located on the heights of Vevey, the site chosen for the 2023-2024 edition is directly connected to an intermediate station of the Vevey – Chardonne – Mont-Pèlerin funicular, which since the beginning of the 20th century has linked the shores of Lake Geneva to the mountainside. Currently occupied by disused horticultural greenhouses overlooking the Lavaux region, it is characterized by the quality of its views and the efficiency of its cable-supported connection, prompting architectural reflection on its possible future. Somewhere between utopia and realism, it could be the setting for a new kind of ecological neighborhood, to be imagined on an already largely artificial hillside. The RELIEFS URBAINS Studio will aim to explore, through the architectural project, the multiple issues and potentialities of such a site. Increased attention will be paid to the question of intermediate housing, as well as to the landscaping and networking of public spaces in relation to the site’s unique characteristics.
