Expressing hope for positive changes in public spaces, advocating for genuine openness,
belonging, and comfort, the chapel at Kaatsspelplein can be a potential shelter for youth,
emphasizing its role in providing a warm and welcoming environment for socializing. A balance
is needed to address the issues of privatised public spaces and the youth's need for their own
spaces.
Envisioning Kaatsspelplein as a garden of expression, the intervention introduces cobblestone
pathways and relaxing spaces, preserving original features. The transformative centerpiece is
the chapel turned greenhouse, with a roof replaced by glass to flood the interior with natural
light. The original timberwork and a deliberately unstructured layout create a harmonious
chaos within the greenhouse, providing an unconventional space for introspection and
interaction. This redesigned haven invites not only relaxation but also civic engagement,
fostering a sense of community through shared activities and mentorship.
