Phäenomena: The Tree of Knowledge (suite)

Timo Van Meensel

The tree of knowledge is a powerful symbol that has been used throughout history to represent the pursuit of truth and understanding. With his roots in the Earth and his branches rising in the sky, it also refers to the interconnectedness of all things.
The fruits of the tree, the pavilions, are abstract forms standing in a landscape of sunflower fields. The sunflower as a symbol of temporality.
The pavilions in form of a dome are inspired by Muqarnas. Muqarnas is a form of Islamic architectural ornamentation, characterized by its complex and intricate design. It is a beautiful and awe-inspiring manifestation of the pursuit of knowledge and the quest for understanding. It represents this pursuit in its very structure: each layer building upon the last, each piece contributing to the whole, and each element carefully crafted and placed to create a harmonious whole.
The pavilion, an integrally-attached Timber Plate Structure, is built out of plywood boxes. Both the prefabrication of the boxes and the on-site assembly occur mostly without the need for glue or screws.
