Phäenomena: Piercing the Void

Barbara Urmossy

Phaenomena are sensational experiences and spectacles that evoke curiosity and wonder.
The complex housing the Phaenomena Exhibition 2024 must reflect this:
the structure must incite visitors to explore both the exhibits and the building itself. It should be as one-of-a-kind as the showpieces themselves - a memorable exhibition-experience.
The project interprets itself as a pier, going horizontally into the site, understanding it as a void to be filled. Situated on an 8x8m grid, the complex utilises wood products and is designed to be flexible to enable catering to diverse exhibits.
Approaching on top of the platform, visitors must descend to the lower level of the structure to explore the exhibitions, creating mystery as to what might lie beneath. Although the pavilions are connected on this lower level, the real experience of the building is the play between levels and sense of orientation: the building itself is a labyrinth of wonders, the Phenomenon housing the Phaenomena.
