Roofscape Exploration

Bryan Roy Parvex

The site is at the crossing between the Limmat and the Weinplatz. On the west side, the high density gives the Altstadt district a labyrinthine character. The building on the built strategy is particularly meaningful in such an environment. The building in question has a wide flat roof which is quite rare in Altstadt. Moreover, it has some qualities such as the privileged view of the Limmat and the Lake so it can be an ideal place for a roofscape proposal. Its facade has the same rigidity as the GAN facade. So I decided to opt for the attitude of building on the existing instead of reinterpreting the whole building according to the GAN image.

The monumental volume serves as a signal to the point angle. It is not perceived as an obstacle but brings qualities by its proportions and lightwell. On the other side, there is a pattern connected with the existing one by taking the pattern of the windows and breaking the cornice. The rooftop floor integrates a completely collective and open space, where services are grouped in cores. The space is completely modular and dedicated to work and meetings. and a kitchen to the north.

On the contrary, the upper level is dedicated to private apartments except for a mezzanine which is collective and interacting with below for a potential 2-story show space. The strategy of the cores is still adopted.
