Inner Street

Micky Gerardi

The focus of this analysis of what is Zurichness in Altstadt is about its silhouette. It is noted that there is a lot of geometrical variations in its shape. There is some cantilevers, many arcades, bow windows and balconies. The roofs have many varied forms and the buildings often don’t have the same height. The facades are often not in the same plane or parallel.

After having spotted a family of images with three facades and a roof that unites them toghether and knowing the facades are not disposed the same one next to the other. The interpolations of this family can give differents shapes between their three facades and the roof. After having selected a site and restarded to make interpolations in order to have images that fits even better the site. This site also have three facades and a roofline that is uncommon. Those facades have a very interesting way to connect each another with horinzontal lines that overflow to the facades next to it. The gan interpolation also produces such connections in the facades. The GAN image suggests moments where the facade goes into the build volume. Both the site and the GAN image form a compositional language.

In altstadt, it is common that a narrow interior street crosses the building blocks. In these alleys, the relationship with the neighborhood is singular. Some windows line up and you can easily see the neighbor’s appartment. The facade’s composition comes from the details of the GAN image and the site’s existing qualities. It is a sublte game of straights and smoothes transitions between the facade’s planes. It highlights the different appartments and elements of program. On the ground floor, the facade slides under the building, generating an inner street that creates a serie of small urban places. The windows are placed in order to bring light as well as visual connexion between each spaces. On the upper level, the facade’s holes generate shared loggias to improve neighbour’s social interactions.
