Living in Vertical

In Seoul, the demand for residential spaces has surged. More and more young people come to the capital city, therefore, the need for single-person households has increased. How can we transform Gangnam urban blocks as a response to the rise of demand for homes and rapid change in social-cultural climates?

After discovering and analyzing Gangnam’s blocks, a lot of narrow voids in between the buildings were noticeable. In this project, the intent is to increase the number of single-person apartments by adding narrow towers between mixed residential and commercial buildings. Filling the gaps generates different challenges such as housing typology and lightning.

Different situations can be considered: the project could simply stand in between two existing buildings. Depending on the width of the gap, duplex and triplex can be prioritized. It can also have a sloped facade if there are windows on a facade and there is enough space. All these towers will give the opportunity to access the existing roofs, creating semi-private gardens.
