The multi-scalar project situated in Sewoon Makercity, is developed as a synergy of two important cultural entities and identities. The atmosphere and characteristics of the neighboring context such as the Gwangjang Market and the artisanal workshops are infused to the ethos of manufacturing infrastructure in order to create a hybrid space able to accommodate a new program of research and development to the site. This new purpose brings a breath of innovation pushing away from linear processes of manufacturing and allowing existing stakeholders to adopt more circular systems and alternative products such as bio-plastics.

What could be key elements which constitute the identity of a building – are they purely formal, esthetic or functional parameters? Through the investigation of envisioning a Circular Gangbuk, the opportunity arose to reimagine what could be this new ethos of manufacturing by leveraging new materials and new ways of adopting the existing space while respecting its heritage. This combination of key ingredients leads to the development of a rejuvenated site which can build upon its strong socio-economic and cultural context. Leading as an example of change, existing stakeholders and shops can evolve into new avenues and discover new possibilities due to the scalar presence of the protagonist of Sewoon.
