LIFE MAKE HOUSE HOUSE MAKE LIFE - Chapter III

Joshua Rigby

CHAPTER III

HOUSE / INTERACT / MATERIALIZE SEMESTER II

in this third part of this exercise students make a house on a site in Belgium- starting from what has been learned from chapter I and II; the house as the outcome of dealing with the existing. the existing
as starting and not as endpoint. and how to interact on a site, or deliberately not

taking focus on a ‘house’ but also focus once again on construction, material, detail; aspects that are all defined not only as quality of perception of space but also by its meaning;
by that taking chapter II as guideline in deciding and changing depending on the meaning of each other house.

making a house; is about construction - it doesn’t fall apart -; and about organization - it doesn’t fall apart -; but also and at the end about beauty - maybe it falls apart; maybe it doesn’t -; for sure.

in fact the issue is; what is material for space; what is detail for material; how does a detail makes space; and in the frame of the house: how is that related to the meaning of space.

we deliberately talk about a house; about living (life) we speak about sleeping, not about a bedroom
we speak about cooking , not about a kitchen
